SUMMARY:Physical Therapy Management of the Cranium\, TMJ\, and AirwaySteve Warfel II\, PT\, DPT\, MTC\, FFMT\, FAAOMPT
DESCRIPTION: The cranium and TMJ are among the most complex regions of the body. When dysfunction arises symptoms present as cervical pain\, complex headaches or disturbance of the airway.  Both of these diagnoses are difficult to quantify and thus equally difficult to evaluate and treat.  This presentation will provide insight into the scaffold for evaluation and treatment of the cranium and TMJ.  Concepts will include anatomical review of these regions and corresponding evaluation and treatment.  An interdisciplinary approach will also be highlighted as this region often times requires referral.  This presentation will focus largely on manual therapy\, but it is noted that treatment should also include postural education and exercise.\nObjectives:\n•To present the anatomy of the cranium including bony structures\, musculature\, fascia\, and nerves\n•To present the anatomy and biomechanics of the TMJ\n•To present assessment tools for evaluation of the cranium\, TMJ\, and airway\n•To develop an understanding of cranial and airway pathologies and when to refer to other disciplines\n•To impart a systematic approach to treatment of this region\nProvide a demonstration that will show an integrated treatment model\n\n\n\nDr. Stephen G Warfel II has been practicing Manual Physical Therapy for 18 years.  His education journey began at Penn State\, where for two years he was a trainer and tester for the US Army Study\, which evaluated the ability of women to gain strength and the physiological changes with a strength training regimen. He was accepted as a trainer for varsity sports at Penn State.  For two years he trained athletes ranging from wrestling to women’s lacrosse with HIIT training philosophy.\nDr. Warfel graduated from Penn State University with a B.S. in Exercise Physiology in December of 1999 and was accepted to Physical Therapy School at the University of St. Augustine for Health Sciences (USA).  He completed his Master and Doctorate degrees in Physical Therapy at USA in 2001 and 2002 respectively\, earning high honors.\nDr. Warfel completed the IPA curriculum and achieved the Certification in Functional Manual Therapy (CFMT) with honors\, and upon graduating and achieving fellow status with the IPA \, he accepted a permanent position at Johnson and Johnson PT as a staff PT as well as co-fellowship instructor.    He has spent the last 5 years working on the viscera\, craniofacial region and airway\, presenting with Dr. Brad Gilden at the AAPMD conference in 2016.  He also presented groundbreaking material on evaluation and treatment of the cranium at the 2019 AAOMPT Conference.  He continues to study these regions in-depth and to develop new treatments to improve physiology as well as biomechanical function.\nDr. Warfel opened KinetChain Integrated Manual Physical Therapy in Aspen\, CO under the guidance of Brad Gliden in September of 2019.\n\n\n\n\n\n1 CE credit available to AAPMD members\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \nRegister/Info
