An O2 Global Airway Health Presentation: Bedside Respiratory Assessment
Ann Kelly, MS, CCC-SLP

October 21 @ 9:00 pm - 10:00 pm EDT

A central goal with orofacial myology therapy is for the client to be able to rest the tongue on the roof of the mouth. If the client does not have a patent nasal airway, the therapy will not last long term, as the client will need to lower the tongue in order to breathe. This course identifies several bedside measures that enable the clinician to know who can benefit from a course of therapy and what respiratory functions can be improved during therapy.

Learning Objectives:

1. Be able to identify functional measurements for every level of the respiratory system.

2. Be able to identify which clients can have long term success with myofunctional therapy.

3. Be able to target specific areas of respiration that can be remediated.

Ann has been a speech pathologist for 30 years, specializing in orofacial myology for the latter 15. She combines her bachelor’s in music and years of musical performance with extensive experience in dysphagia, cognition, articulation and breathing assessment and remediation. She worked with seniors for 15 years and taught courses on dementia.

She is the proprietor of Big Mouth Speech Therapy in Tewksbury, Massachusetts, where clients become big mouths in every sense of the phrase. In her time off, Ann loves exploring new-to-her cultures near and far, interacting with animals in captivity, kayaking and writing screen plays.
