The Total Load Lens: Rethinking Childhood Chronic Illness and Neurodevelopment
Beth Lambert, Founder and Executive Director of Documenting Hope

Monday, September 14 @ 9:00 pm - 10:00 pm EDT

Rates of chronic health, behavioral, and neurodevelopmental conditions among children have risen dramatically, prompting an urgent need to look beyond individual diagnoses and consider the whole child. This presentation introduces the Total Load framework, which examines how cumulative environmental, nutritional, physiological, developmental, and psychosocial stressors can interact with a child’s unique biology and resilience to influence health and development.

Participants will explore how reducing stressors, increasing health-supporting inputs, addressing underlying physiological imbalances, and revisiting interrupted developmental processes may create opportunities for improved outcomes. Because these children often have needs that cross traditional professional boundaries, the presentation emphasizes interdisciplinary collaboration among medical, dental, airway, nutrition, developmental, and other professionals working in genuine partnership with parents and caregivers, who remain central to understanding the child’s history, environment, and day-to-day needs. The presentation also examines emerging evidence and documented cases of significant improvement and remission.

At the conclusion of this presentation, participants will be able to do the following:

  1. Explain the Total Load framework and describe how cumulative environmental, lifestyle, physiological, and developmental stressors may interact with genetic and bio-individual factors to influence childhood health and neurodevelopment.
  2. Identify key categories of stressors, physiological imbalances, and health-supporting factors that may affect a child’s resilience, developmental trajectory, and expression of chronic or neurodevelopmental symptoms.
  3. Describe a whole-child, parent-centered, interdisciplinary approach to reducing Total Load, strengthening resilience, addressing underlying imbalances, and supporting stalled or interrupted developmental processes.

Author, educator and former healthcare consultant, Beth Lambert has monitored and documented the escalating rates of childhood chronic conditions for 17 years. Her first book, A Compromised Generation, provides a thorough analysis of the origins of this modern health crisis and documents how modifications to environmental and lifestyle factors can profoundly influence health outcomes, including full disease reversal. Beth is also the co-author of Brain Under Attack: A Resource for Parents and Caregivers of Children with PANS, PANDAS, and Autoimmune Encephalitis

Beth is the Founder and Executive Director of Documenting Hope, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that focuses on root cause healing solutions for children’s chronic health and developmental issues. Documenting Hope conducts independent research studies that examine the cumulative impact or “total load” of environmental stressors on children’s health and their mitigation through personalized and systems-based treatment approaches. Beth is the mother of three children and is passionate about raising awareness about the connection between daily choices, human health, and planetary health.
