AAPMD PHYSICAL THERAPY SECTION WEBINAR:The Neural- Autonomic- Adrenal Axis and the Inflammatory Process: Restoring Immune System Homeostasis
Cheryl Wardlaw, PT, MMSc, CFMT

January 18, 2023 @ 9:00 pm - 10:00 pm EST

Dysregulation of the Immune System plays a key role in auto-immune disorders and the state of chronic inflammation. Clinically, chronic inflammation complicates the management of numerous patient diagnoses and symptoms. The modulating role of the Central Nervous System and the Autonomic Nervous System in optimal Immune System function is complex and can be inconsistently considered when developing a Plan of Care. This webinar is designed to introduce the anatomy and interactions of the Central Nervous System, Autonomic Nervous System and Immune System. Strategies for improved regulation of these systems will be presented.

Cheryl Wardlaw completed her BS in Physical Therapy at the Medical College of Georgia in 1977, and her MMSc in Neurology at Emory University in 1985.  Mrs. Wardlaw began working as a physical therapist at Emory University Hospital in 1977. Cheryl has been on Faculty with the IPA since 1980. Her course work includes both Functional Mobilization and Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation.  Mrs. Wardlaw was certified with distinction as a Certified Functional Manual Therapist in 2004, and re-certified in 2014.

Following years of study into the role the nervous system, inflammation and the immune system  plays in the resolution of pain, Mrs. Wardlaw wrote her patient focused book, Taming Pain: Lessons from the Trenches, which is now also a webinar.  She has since developed webinars and handbooks focusing on the Endocannabinoid System and on the Stress System for the treatment of unresolved pain.

Mrs. Wardlaw is the Director of Inpatient and Outpatient Rehabilitation Services at Emory University Hospital, in Atlanta, Georgia.  She continues direct patient care on a daily basis, utilizing both her manual therapy skills and her knowledge of the neuro-immuno-nutritional aspects of sustained pain.
