An O2 Global Airway Health Presentation: Sleep Medicine and Addiction – Clinical intersection, Mechanisms and Treatment

The webinar will discuss what addiction is and how it develops. We will review addiction treatments of OUD (Opiate Use Disorder) and the mechanism by which OUD affects sleep and how sleep affects OUD. Additionally, we will discuss treatment of a hypothetical patient and the issues affecting treatment.

Dr. Van Dyke, DO, MPH, is currently the Medical Director of New Directions Healthcare, a federally licensed Opiate Treatment Program. He graduated from Duke University and attended the Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine graduating in 1979. He did a flexible internship at Normandy Osteopathic Hospital in St Louis, MO and  then entered the United States Air Force and served as a Flight Surgeon for the 80th Flying training Wing.

After leaving the Air Force, he started a career in Emergency Medicine becoming Board Certified in Emergency Medicine. He attended the University of Michigan and received a Masters in Public Health with a focus on Occupation Medicine in 1987. He practiced Occupational Medicine for 20 years; and in 2014 he started New Directions Healthcare and became board certified in Addiction Medicine and is currently a Fellow of the American Society of Addiction Medicine.

His current practice focuses primarily on the treatment of Opioid Use Disorders. He also has Sleep Apnea and has been treated successfully for over 20 years by wearing an oral appliance.
