CHILDREN: MISSED, DISMISSED & MISDIAGNOSED
Sharon Moore, SLP
May 10, 2021 @ 9:00 pm - 10:00 pm EDT
Signs and symptoms of airway problems in young children are visible but frequently missed, dismissed, even misdiagnosed by both parents and professionals, in the name of ‘expected childhood ailments’ or the notion that ‘he or she ‘will grow out of it’. Untreated airway issues, irrespective of severity, erode and undermine sleep quality, and sub-optimal sleep can become the new normal for the child and the family. This presentation will explore a number of cases presenting to the speech pathologist, where pro-active screening was able to pinpoint not only an airway and sleep issue that was otherwise dismissed or misdiagnosed, but enabled proactive medical dental team management approach to resolve the child’s issues. This presentation explores some of the challenges and constraints to early identification of children’s airway issues and why children’s breathing related sleep disturbances require us to look beyond the Apnea Hypopnea Index.
