Phenotype Driven Treatment Planning and Surgically Facilitated Orthodontic Therapy: An Interdisciplinary Approach
George A. Mandelaris, DDS, MS, FACD, FICD
This presentation will discuss how periodontists contribute to treatment planning for complex interdisciplinary cases, how we use corticotomy and dentoalveolar bone augmentation surgery in managing skeletal and dental malocclusion, and how we help reduce the risks associated with conventional therapies while simultaneously expanding the envelope of opportunities.
Assessment of the temporomandibular complex using CBCT imaging modalities and the role of phenotype modification therapy will be described in decompensating skeletal and dental malocclusions as a part of today’s contemporary interdisciplinary dentofacial therapy.
EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES:
• To appreciate the limitations of conventional orthodontics in decompensating the dental and skeletal disharmony malocclusion patient.
• To present a novel phenotype driven treatment planning methodology in Interdisciplinary Dentofacial Therapy
• To discuss the biology and application of phenotype modification therapy in the management of dental and skeletal malocclusions
• To present how phenotype modification can complement and expand orthodontic therapy, ultimately ensuring esthetic and functional outcome success for the orthodontist and orthognathic surgeon.
• To demonstrate the role of phenotype modification in decompensating different dentofacial disharmony skeletal malocclusion patterns, especially for the patient requiring orthognathic surgery.
Dr. Mandelaris, DDS, MS, FACD, FICD, attended the University of Michigan from undergraduate through dental school. He completed a post-graduate residency program at the University of Louisville, School of Dentistry, where he obtained a certificate in the specialty of Periodontology as well as a Master of Science (M.S.) degree in Oral Biology. A nationally recognized expert, he was appointed by the AAP to co-chair the first-ever Best Evidence Consensus Workshop on the use of CBCT Imaging in Periodontics as well as co-author the academy’s guidelines. In 2018, he was recognized with American Academy of Periodontology’s Special Citation Award. Dr. Mandelaris is the 2018 recipient of The Saul Schluger Memorial Award for Clinical Excellence in Diagnosis and Treatment Planning.
Dr. Mandelaris currently serves on the American Academy of Periodontology Board of Trustees and has served as a Past President of the Illinois Society of Periodontists. He is in private practice in Oakbrook Terrace and Glenview, Illinois (USA) where he limits his practice to Periodontics, Dental Implant and Dentoalveolar Bone Surgery.
