Who Is Qualified to Take This Course?
The only medical professionals who are eligible to work as orofacial myologists and hold certification from the International Association of Orofacial Myology are doctors of dental surgery (DDS), doctors of medicine in dentistry (DMD), registered dental hygienists (RDH), and speech-language pathologists (SLP).
What This Course Prepares You For
This course prepares participants to work as orofacial myology providers; however, completion of this course does not make them eligible to be called certified orofacial myologists (COMs), even if they are in the process of becoming one.
Course Learning Expectations – The Participant Will Be Able to:

Understand the history of myofunctional therapy and how this field began

Explain why myofunctional therapy exists

Identify the role of the International Association of Orofacial Myology (IAOM)

Identify the anatomy and physiology of the muscles of the face, tongue, and other related structures

Demonstrate the ability to identify myofunctional disorders

Define myofunctional therapy

Master and perform the assessment and treatment of myofunctional disorders

Write treatment goals that are achievable and measurable

Perform and appreciate the hierarchy of treatment intervention

Describe the rationale behind the treatment hierarchy

Demonstrate understanding of the importance of mutual referral

Demonstrate understanding of the importance of teamwork

Identify the best time to begin myofunctional treatment

Identify the appropriate time for discharge

Master and abide by the policies, bylaws, and professional code of conduct of the IAOM

Describe and understand how to become an IAOM member

Identify the key elements of a successful practice
