Mindfulness meditation is seen as one of the pillars of health. Recent speakers in AAPMD webinars have stressed the importance of mindfulness meditation in both patient care and self care. Mindfulness is used by business leaders (Mindfulness is Aetna CEO’s prescription for success, Steve Jobs and Apple), athletes (Phil Jackson and sports teams on all levels), and in health care.
The scientific investigation of mindfulness has revealed that mindfulness practice has profound effects on our biology, mental health and happiness and it has been shown to improve cortisol regulation, neuorplastticity with growth of grey matter in the brains executive function area and reduction in amygdala, increase in telomerase and epigenetics. It is used in treatment of insomnia, anxiety and stress and pain management.
Dr Mark Abramson, Stanford Adjunct Professor in Psychiatry and who is on the founding board of AAPMD and founded the Stanford Medical Center Mindfulness program, has directed and taught mindfulness at Stanford for students, faculty and staff including a program to address physician burnout for the last 25 years.
This 7 session course is an intensive training in mindfulness meditation practice based on Dr. Abramson’s courses at Stanford. Each class will consist of group practice of mindfulness, and didactic learning will incorporate education into the scientific knowledge and application of mindfulness in health care.
It will require a commitment of daily practice and reading and students will be provided practice recordings for the daily self practice.
